The curtains are up, the rug installed, and the new furniture placed, and although you've made a huge improvement to the space, it's still not quite there, the room feels static -- something is missing.

Finishing touches matter, like pillows, like artwork, and those bits and bobs that add personality and interest to a space. Sometimes this can be the most challenging aspect of getting a room right. It takes time and imagination to find those accessories to make a room come alive. It's about the juxtaposition of objects and the layering of textures and the pops of color or interest that lead your eye around a room.

Here are some tips to help you add those finishing touches to your room:

Design professionals understand layers. Layers are what make a painting have depth, a flower arrangement spectacular, and a room more visually dynamic. Accent pillows, an area rug, a throw, wall art and carefully placed objects are ways to tie a room together.

Texture gives a room style. Mix it up by using a variety of textures in a room, like wood, stone, faux fur, and natural fibers like linen and wool. Simply using one or two textures can have a huge impact. like a jute area rug or reclaimed wood coffee table, or a faux fur draped over a sofa or ottoman.

Create movement in the space by playing with the height of objects. Use a tall tree in a corner of a room or tall branches in a vase. When creating vignettes in a room, like on a mantel, use varying heights of objects to create a more dynamic statement.

Contrast in a space is another important way to make a room more interesting. You can do this with pattern, texture, color or with an object of a different style. Contrasting elements make ta room more interesting and way more chic.

Get the light right! Lighting can make or break a space. Use down lights and up-lights to high light objects and spaces. Layering lighting is essential. Make sure you use table or standing lights, ceiling lights, and wall sconces. Spend the time to choosing the right bulbs (color of light) for your room. Beautiful lights are the jewels of a room. Take the time to find interesting and beautiful ones!

Lastly,

Add a touch of black to a room. Black grounds a space.
